Meditation of the month- April

Lately, I’ve been leaning into a practice that never fails to bring me back to center, Yoga Nidra. It’s become my go-to way to truly relax, especially falling asleep when my mind is racing or when I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep.

I first learned about Yoga Nidra when my son returned from a middle school trip to New Mexico. He came home talking about how he did “Yoga Hedra and had never felt so relaxed.” I could not find anything about this magical experience he had until I was in a yoga studio and saw a sign for Yoga Nidra! Mystery solved!

About two years ago, I completed both my Level 1 and Level 2 Yoga Nidra certifications, and that experience deepened my appreciation for this powerful practice. Yoga Nidra, often called “yogic sleep,” isn’t about doing, it’s about being. It’s a guided journey into a state between waking and sleeping where the body can rest deeply, and the mind can gently unwind.

Even as a practitioner and guide, I still love being led through Yoga Nidra sessions myself. One of my favorite ways to do this is through the Insight Timer app. It’s such an accessible resource, and I find myself returning again and again to teachers like Ally Boothroyd and John Siddique. Their voices and styles each offer something unique, yet both create a space where I can completely let go.

There’s something incredibly humbling about allowing yourself to be supported in this way, to simply lie down, close your eyes, and be guided. No expectations, just rest.

In a world that often celebrates constant productivity, choosing rest can feel radical. But I’ve found that through Yoga Nidra, rest becomes not just necessary, but transformative.
