"The Secret Mall Apartment"
I recently watched Secret Mall Apartment, and I cannot stop thinking about it.
The documentary follows a group of artists who secretly built and lived in a hidden apartment inside the Providence Place Mall in Providence, Rhode Island. What could have easily been a quirky headline turns into something much deeper. It becomes a story about creativity, community, courage, and the human need to carve out space in a world that often feels commercial and impersonal.
What I loved most were the people. They weren’t reckless or trying to cause harm. They were thoughtful, artistic, and surprisingly intentional. Each person brought something different to the project, and you could feel the trust and collaboration between them. It wasn’t just about hiding out in a mall. It was about building something meaningful together.
I’ve always been drawn to the idea of tiny houses and unconventional living spaces. There’s something grounding about living with less and being more deliberate about how you use space. The Secret Mall Apartment captured that same spirit. They created a small, simple home in the most unexpected place. It felt rebellious in a gentle way.
What stood out to me most was the sense of community they built.
• They shared responsibility
• They respected the space
• They created art and connection
• They protected something that felt sacred
It reminded me that home isn’t always about square footage. It’s about intention. It’s about who you share it with. It’s about creating beauty and meaning wherever you are.
Secret Mall Apartment isn’t just about a hidden room in a mall. It’s about imagination. It’s about questioning what is possible. And it’s about the quiet power of building something small and meaningful with people who believe in the same vision.
Watching it made me reflect on how we create space in our own lives. Physical space. Emotional space. Creative space. Sometimes the most powerful spaces are the ones no one else sees.
